Speed and endurance, Wengelin got both

Euromtb 2016 Titel sponsor Bianchi just signed him and Swedens Matthias Wengelin are pumped to get the 2016 season started. He showed great allround skills during 2015 winning both XC Marathon and XC Eliminator National Championships. We had a short chat with him

Not to many combine both speed and endurance as well as Matthias Wengelin who has three consecutive gold-medals in the XCE (Eliminator) Swedish Nationals. He also got three consecutive medals in XCO and in 2015 he took the gold medal at the XC Marathon Nationals Championships. But doing so well in both power up discipline of elimination as well as in the endurance testing marathons has been regular for Wengelin. He won the Swedish Marathon Cup both in 2012 and 2013.

What´s his thoughts at this point in preseason and for next season:

What´s the feeling this far into the pre-season?

It´s just a good feeling, I am pumped to get started to race again!

When and where are starting racing 2016?

Cyprus and Sunshine Cup. Has been there every year since 2008 and it feels good to stay in the same tracks as previous years.

European Championships in Sweden, home court, next year. What´s your thoughts regarding that?

An international Championships on home ground is something that happens every day to say the least. It´s going to be damn fun to show friends at home what the sport really is like.

You took the win at the National Championships in both XCM (Marathon) as well as XCE (Eliminator/Sprint) during 2015. And you´ve done good results in both before. How do you manage so well in two disciplines, that seems to need very different strengths?

As I see it you only win at being allround, both the power bursts from sprints and the endurance from marathon helps me in the XC-races. More XC-riders should do more marathons and more marathon riders should do XC-races!

You just singed with Bianchi for 2016, tell us about the new ride?

I just picked up a Metanhol 29.1 FS, full Sram XX1 with Sram Guide breaks. Right now there is a couple of formula brakes on there but I like the feeling of Guide, they weigh somewhat more but ”feeling first, weight second”. Tires are not decided yet so there will be some more ”news” about that later on!

We say good luck to Matthias in 2016!
